Understanding New Home Certification

A choice of certification programs to meet your needs
The EnerGuide Rating Service is the basic building block in all our certification programs. An EnerGuide Rating shows a standard measure of a home's energy performance. It shows you (and future buyers) exactly how energy efficient your home is.
The rating is calculated based on standard operation assumptions so that you can compare the energy performance of one house against another. A home's energy efficiency level is rated on a scale of 0 to 100. A rating of 0 represents a home with major air leakage, no insulation and extremely high energy consumption. For a brand new house, a rating of 80 or higher is good.
For builders just starting to build green homes EnerGuide New Home certification is a great place to begin!
ENERGY STAR® for New Homes certification ensures that a new home meets a minimum energy performance level (EnerGuide 80) that is approximately 25% more efficient than those homes built to minimum provincial building codes. ENERGY STAR qualified homes feature proper insulation, a well-sealed building envelope and ENERGY STAR qualified equipment and appliances.
The ENERGY STAR mark is an internationally recognized symbol for energy efficiency. By identifying and promoting energy-saving products, the ENERGY STAR initiative helps protect the environment and lowers consumer’s energy bills at the same time.
R-2000 is a green certification that uses an EnerGuide 80 Rating as a point of departure but adds sustainability features that make the home healthier and more resource-efficient. The R-2000 Standard includes requirements related to energy efficiency, indoor air quality and the use of environmentally responsible products and materials. It does not, however, specify exactly how a house must be built. Rather, the R-2000 Standard sets criteria for how an R-2000 home must perform. This leaves the designer, evaluator and builder free to choose the most effective and economical way to build it.
LEED® Canada for Homes is a holistic green certification developed by the Canada Green Building Council. LEED Canada for Homes is typically used by builders engaged in construction of high-performance homes and typically involves a higher level of interaction between the builder and our verification team to ensure that the home meets a broad range of requirements that are part of the standard.
LEED certifies green homes using criteria in eight different categories: site selection, water efficiency, materials & resources, energy & atmosphere, indoor environmental quality, location & linkages, awareness & education, and innovation. Within each of these areas, projects earn points toward certification.
All LEED certified homes must meet 19 mandatory measures and a minimum set of optional measures. The green measures are verified on-site by our third-party verification team using a protocol developed by the CaGBC.
LEED has four levels of certification: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with Platinum representing the highest level of achievement.
