Extractions | Oral Surgery | New Westminster Dentist | Mouth Pain

Although in dentistry our primary effort is to save teeth, occasionally teeth need to be extracted. Teeth that are so badly broken down that they cannot be fixed fall in this category. In certain instances, we may recommend the removal of your wisdom teeth to prevent future problems.

Wisdom teeth that are partially erupted may result in repeated infections occurring in the gum surrounding them. This is a condition known as pericoronitis and can be very painful. We normally recommend these teeth be extracted. Sometimes wisdom teeth may be impacted or stuck in bone or within the gums. Depending on their orientation, these teeth may or may not need to be extracted.

Sometimes we may recommend extracting wisdom teeth that are fully erupted because these teeth are difficult to keep clean and may end up with decay or cause problems with cavities or bone loss on adjacent teeth.

Depending on the type of extraction, oral surgery may be performed in the office or may be referred out to a specialist. Following oral surgery, it is usually recommended that you take it easy for a couple of days to allow for proper healing. Medications may also be prescribed to help with healing following certain procedures.

We would be happy to answer any questions that you may have regarding this or any other treatment we provide.
