PROGRAM:  Health Care Assistant Diploma Program 

                          Residential Care Aid

Program Description

The Health Care Assistant Diploma program aims at developing a student’s intellectual ability, caring personality and managerial skills through an appropriate blending of practical experiences and classroom based knowledge. The program assists the student in understanding and developing the unique leadership qualities required to successfully work in this field as a caring and nurturing attendant. The specific objectives of the program are to:

  • To understand the different complex and chronic medical conditions and the proper care associated to it.
  • To understand physical , cognitive, and/ or functional deficits that interfere with activities of daily living
  • To understand the required end-of-life (palliative) care
  • To understand and have general knowledge of the acute illnesses and the proper care associated to it.

Careers with Health Care Assistant Program

  Admission Requirements  

The admission requirements are as follows:

       DOMESTIC STUDENTS:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
  • Applicants must provide proof of Grade 12 completion: High School or Post-Secondary Transcript or Adult Dogwood or G.E.D.
  • Applicants must provide evidence of acceptable levels of reading, speaking and understanding skills of the English language. Students may be required to write the TOEFL exam.  English 11 with a letter grade of “C” or above or equivalent.

 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Applicants must have completed grade 12 or equivalent
  • Students must provide a current Student Visa, and a copy of their birth certificate
  • Applicants must have taken and provide the school their current score on the IELTS exam.  A score of 6.0 and over for the diploma program will only be accepted.

Program Fees

All fees are paid upon enrolment per semester. International students have payment of one half of their tuition before Official Letters of Approval are mailed out.  Program Cost Breakdowns are given upon inquiry and all fees are subjected to change at the institutions discretion.

Duration of the Program

The Health Care Assistant Diploma program is 6 months in duration.  A semester is of 10 weeks in length, there are three semesters in a year unless stated.

The specific objectives of the program are to:

  • Provide person-centred care and assistance that recognizes and respects the uniqueness of each individual resident or client.
  • Use an informed problem-solving approach to provide care and assistance that promotes the physical, psychological, social, cognitive and spiritual well-being of clients/residents and families.
  • Provide care and assistance for clients/residents experiencing complex health challenges.
  • Provide care and assistance for clients/residents experiencing cognitive and/or mental health challenges.
  • Interact with other members of the health care team in ways that contribute to effective working relationships and the achievement of goals.
  • Communicate clearly, accurately and in sensitive ways with clients/residents and families within a variety of community and facility contexts.
  • Provide personal care and assistance in a safe, competent and organized manner.
  • Recognize and respond to own self-development, learning and health enhancement needs.
  • Perform the care provider role in a reflective, responsible, accountable and professional manner.

PROGRAM:  Medical Office Assistant Diploma

Program Description

The MOA diploma program offered at PWC will prepare students for employment in front end reception, clerical or supporting positions in medically-oriented institutions such as hospitals and doctors’ offices. The learner will obtain skills to use effective verbal and written communication methods, demonstrate office procedures and time management, utilize medical terminology in all areas, attain a good understanding on the use of computers in the industry environment, complete computerized medical billing, and apply medical office procedures and standards.

The Medical Office Assistant diploma program prepares students for the beginnings of an  career in clerical and supporting position of the medical field.  This program allows opening of more doors of opportunity either in the workplace or more advanced studies. This program helps the graduate to fulfill potentials for a career in a helping and compassionate field, a sense of increased responsibility, and greater personal development.
