Serum Testing

Food Sensitivity Testing

IgG 96

The IgG 96 includes 96 of the most common food sensitivities. It is a great test to have done in order to see what foods you are having an immune response to. This essentially means that this food is a stressor on your body instead of a nutrient. As part of the eating alive program it is important to remove the majority of the external stressors from your body along with supporting your weakest organ systems, which Dr. Matsen and Dr. Groenewoud will do with your supplements. It is in this environment that the body has a solid foundation to start the healing process.

The IgG 96 includes the following foods:
Almond Apple Asparagus Avocado Banana
Barley Basil Bay Leaf Bean, Green Bean, Lima
Cabbage Beef Blueberry Bran Broccoli
Celery Clam Cocoa Coconut Codfish
Coffee Cola Corn Crab Cucumber
Dill Egg White Egg Yolk Eggplant Garlic
Ginger Gluten Grape Grapefruit Haddock

IgG 184

The IgG 184 is recommended to patients that have a primary concern of digestive disturbance (gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, stomach upset, IBS, chrones, colitis etc) it tests the 96 foods above plus an additional 88 foods. This will give the patient more information to work with. Also if the patient eats a larger variety of foods such as the rarer grains amaranth, buckwheat etc and/or lots of spices

The IgG 184 includes the 96 foods above plus an additional 88 foods:
Amaranth Anchovy Apricot Arrowroot Artichoke
Black Bass Red Bean Red Beet Blackberry Brazil Nut

Micronutrient Testing

This test will measure your vitamins, minerals, amino acids, anti-oxidants, carbohydrates, fatty acids and metabolites, giving you a great broad picture of your health and allowing you to be preventative in taking care of your deficiencies, and to supplement those nutrients that are on their way to becoming deficient, before you have any of the symptoms.

This test becomes even more significant, because in North America the majority of the adult to geriatric population is on up to 10 different pharmaceutical medications that cause micronutrient deficiencies. Their biochemical interactions with different pathways in the body deplete selective nutrients from those pathways.

Here are some of the pharmaceutical drugs that should be monitored for nutrient deficiencies:

  • Anti-Inflammatories
  • Diuretics
  • Cardiovascular drugs
  • Diabetic drugs
  • Anti-viral agents
  • Antacids
  • Antibiotics
  • Cholesterol drugs
  • Anti-depressants
  • Female Hormones
  • Anti-convulsants

Life Labs

As Naturopathic Physicians, Dr. Matsen and Dr. Groenewoud can requisition for any lab test that your MD would. This gives you the convenience to not have to go to your medical doctor to get the labs that Dr. Matsen or Dr. Groenewoud would like to see run for you. However it is not covered under the medical plan and is a cost to the patient. Please check with you extended health plans in regards to laboratory testing because most should cover some if not all of these costs.

Saliva Testing for Hormones

Why saliva?

We test saliva because this is where free hormones predominate, the free hormone fraction is very important because it is the bioactive fraction that most significantly influences living cells

Adrenal Stress Index

This test is assessing the very important function of your adrenal glands that produce your main stress hormones. It is these hormone that are essential to help your body deal with stressors in life, get you bouncing out of bed in the morning, and also takes over hormone production for postmenopausal women and men in andropause. The Adrenal stress index is indicated for patients with chronic stress, sleep disturbance, lack of vitality and energy, muscle and joint pain, hypoglycemia, migraine headaches, osteoporosis poor memory, stress maladaption, low sex drive and low body temperatures.

Female Cycling Hormone Panel (For women who are menstruating each month)

The female hormone panel is a simple non-invasive test. Eleven saliva samples are collected throughout the woman’s menstrual cycle, no matter what the length is. This assessment gives a clear and descriptive picture of the woman’s hormones throughout the whole cycle instead of a snap shot assessment on only a single day of her cycle. This data will show how estrogen and progesterone are cycling and where the dysfunction in a woman’s cycle is. This test would be very beneficial in woman who experience PMS, infertility issues, miscarriages, cycle irregularities, migraine headaches, early osteoporosis, poly cystic ovarian disease, dysmenorrhea (painful and heavy periods).

Post Menopause Hormone Panel (For women who have not have a period for 1 year)

This test is one sample that gives a hormone baseline of the bioactive fraction of hormones. It also gives a risk assessment for both breast and uterine proliferative diseases and osteoporosis. I recommend this test to almost all menopausal woman that are experiences menopausal symptoms or would like a risk assessment done, it also gives us a great baseline to work form to initiate bio- identical hormone corrective therapy.

Perimenopause Hormone Panel (For women who are getting irregular periods as they transition into menopause)

This test takes 2 samples, 1st one collected anytime and the 2nd one 13-15 days later. It is a great assessment for peri menopausal women with regular or irregular cycles. It also gives a risk assessment for both breast and uterine proliferative diseases and osteoporosis. I recommend this for almost all of my perimenopausal patients to get a good baseline as they are transitioning into menopause.

Bone Hormone Panel

Bone turnover is a process that takes place throughout our lifetimes. There is a delicate balance between bone formation and breakdown. Estrogen and Progesterone in woman and Testosterone in men allow for bone formation, so as we age and our hormone levels decrease we have an increase risk of bone loss. This test assesses hormones but also includes a Pyrilinks-D urine test, which shows the severity of bone breakdown. The Bone Health Panel can be used as a screen for osteoporosis in conjunction with bone densitometry or as a follow up test to monitor the bone response in bio identical hormone therapy and osteoporosis treatment protocols.

Male Hormone Panel

Many changes can be seen in a man’s body between the ages 40 and 50 that point towards hormone imbalances and deficiencies in hormones . This may be considered the male equivalent of menopause, which is called andropause. These symptoms can include; decreased muscle mass and strength, decreased vigor or low energy, decreased libido, insomnia, nervousness and depression, hair loss. The male hormone panel gives a nice overview of what the individual males hormone picture is.

Gastrointestinal Health Panel

This is a non-invasive screen of the gastrointestinal tract and its function. It includes 15-22 tests of both saliva and stools samples from a home collection. The panel includes:

  • Pathogen screening for bacteria, fungi, yeast and various parasites
  • Digestion related screens fro enzyme levels and immunochemical markers for intolerance to common offending foods
  • Intestinal function marker to evaluate irritation and inflammation: markers indicate overall status of gut immunity and integrity.

Diagnostic Imaging

Thermography

Breast Thermography is medical imaging using a computerized infrared camera that shows normal vs. abnormal blood vessel and heat patterns in the breasts. Often when cancer tumours are forming, they develop their own blood supply in order to feed an accelerated growth (this is known as malignant angiogenesis). Medical experts suggest that this process may start years in advance of detection of palpable tumors. This physiological change is detected as abnormal blood vessels and heat patterns by the infrared camera.

Thermograms may become the first sign in showing a woman her risk for potential development of breast cancer.

Similarly, it has been shown that a persistent abnormal Thermogram is the single most important sign of high risk for future breast cancer development; 10 times more significant than first order family history. Therefore, Breast Thermography may have the ability to reveal high risk for cancers at the earliest and most treatable stage. This technology is beneficial as it has the unique ability to show the effects of hormones on the breasts. Studies suggest that the single greatest risk factor for the future development of breast cancer is lifetime exposure of estrogen (see Dr. Groenewoud’s blog on xenoestrogens) on the breasts. A unique thermogram may be able to alert a woman to follow-up with her doctor to see if she has estrogen dominance in her breasts, thus is significant in helping a woman take a proactive role in prevention.

Thermography is radiation-free, pain-free, comfortable and non-invasive. The entire procedure takes 30 minutes and women of all ages can be imaged. For instance, young women with densebreasts, those pregnant or nursing, as well as “pre” and “post” menopausal women all benefit from Thermography. Likewise, women with all types of breasts can use Thermography – young dense breasts, implants, fibrous and fibrocystic, partial mastectomy or lumpectomy – all can be imaged. As the incidents of breast cancers are rising in women under 40, very early risk assessment is extremely important; especially as cancers in younger women are more aggressive.

The Thermographic images are read by a doctor who is a board certified Thermologist. The assessment is documented as a medical report to be discussed with a woman’s primary care physician – ie: medical or naturopathic doctor. Currently, no single screening procedure can detect 100% of all breast cancer risk. Thermography is FDA approved as an adjunct to be used along with breast self-exam and other imaging tools (mammogram, ultra-sound, MRI) as recommended by a woman’s doctor.

Thermography is….a risk assessment screening that shows the physiology of the breast. Physiological changes may be apparent earlier than structural changes identified by other methods; hence, aiding in prevention or the earliest detection of disease. Studies show that when used in conjunction with other methods…a woman has a 95% chance of finding disease early. As women, Thermography can help us be pro-active in potentially staving off breast cancer or possibly glean a greater chance of survival due to catching physiological changes in their earliest stage.

In House Clinical Testing

Muscle Testing (Applied Kinesiology)

Muscle testing (also known as applied kinesiology) is a feedback system that Dr. Matsen uses to test the body for imbalances, whether these imbalances are caused by external stimuli, or internally by yeast, parasites, or poorly functioning organs. Electrocardiograms (ECG), electroencephalograms (EEG), biofeedback, and lie detector tests are other examples of such feedback systems.

The human body (as well as animals and plants) has an electrical or energy system that animates it. This is the chi that is described in Traditional Chinese Medicine that energizes the body’s organs, glands, and systems. You can think of this energy as being similar to the battery that runs a car. Your body’s energetic field is measurable and is directly related to your health.

Muscle testing involves isolating a muscle—Dr. Matsen uses the shoulder muscle—and checking its ability to remain strong when substances such as foods, supplements, drugs, etc. are brought into your energy field. Each substance that is being tested has its own energy, which can flow through the container in which it is stored. If a substance is in harmony with your energy system (that is, if it does not disrupt or weaken your energy), the muscle will remain strong or “locked.” If the substance is not in harmony, your muscle will feel weak. Dr. Matsen is trained to detect even slight fluctuations in the strength of your muscle and uses this method to test if your organs are weak, which supplements are suitable for you, and if you have intestinal yeast.

In conjunction with the muscle testing, Dr. Matsen uses a Vega machine. This allows him to test many different supplements fairly quickly so that your arm doesn’t tire too easily. The Vega machine outputs a low level electrical current—the same frequency as your body’s energy (10 Hz)—, which runs through an electrode that you hold in your hand. This allows the energy of the supplement that’s being tested into your energy field. Dr. Matsen can then determine whether the substance is beneficial for you by muscle testing.

This type of testing does not give quantitative results; it cannot determine the degree of pathology or organ damage, and it cannot detect the amount of toxic metals or yeast that may be present in your body.

Urine Analysis

We do a standard urine test to check for the presence of substances such as protein, ketones, blood, sugar, etc. in the urine.

Blood Picture

The H-L-B Blood Picture was devised to observe free radical activity in the blood. Free radicals are highly destructive substances, which, in large quantities, contribute to many diseases. We put a few drops of blood from a patient’s earlobe onto a microscope slide, and then we put the slide under a microscope at a magnification of 200 and take a picture of the blood. A second blood picture is taken later on in the treatment program. The blood pictures are used to monitor the success of treatment and as a visual aid for the patient.
