At Bylands Landscaping & Irrigation Ltd. we off many different aspects as well as services for both Residential and Commercial projects such as:
Landscape design focuses on the artistic merits of design. Landscape design takes into account soils, drainage, climate and other issues, because the survival of selected plants depends on those. Our Landscape designer deals with small and large scale projects. The establishment of landscape plants over a period of time is not landscape design, but is considered "landscape management". Landscape design is almost synonymous with garden design. Our Landscape Designer can, and does, embrace garden design, landscape management, landscape engineering, landscape detailing, landscape urbanism, landscape assessment, and landscape planning.
Refer to the paved areas like streets & sidewalks, large business complexes & housing developments, and other industrial areas where the upper-soil-profile is no longer exposed to the actual surface of the Earth. The term is especially used in heavily urbanized/suburbanized areas with little bare soil.
Typical small-scale hardscaping examples include brick patios and sidewalks. Retaining walls are often used to create boundaries between hardscapes and earth landscaping features, or softscapes. From an urban planning perspective hardscapes can include very large features, such as paver roads. Most artificial water features are technically hardscapes because they require a barrier to retain water, instead of letting it drain into the surrounding soil.
From an aesthetic perspective, hardscaping allows workers to erect landscaping features that would otherwise be impossible due to soil erosion, or that compensate for large amounts of human traffic that would cause wear on bare earth or grass.
Softscape refers to the elements of a landscape that comprise live, horticultural elements. Softscaping can include, flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, flower beds, etc. The purpose of softscape is to lend character to the landscaping, create an aura, ambience, and reflect the sensibilities of the inhabitants.
The term softscape stands in contrast to hardscape which represents inanimate objects of a landscape such as pavers, stones, rocks, etc
Water Smart Technology
Having education in the rapidly changing field of Water Smart Technology is a crucial asset to the success of your Landscape. Our staff is constantly updating our resources in order to improve the environment that we work in, save resources, reduce labor, and conserve water; and with the Okanagan environment this is key.
Our training informs us of Dry Climate Lawn Turf Management; Irrigation Maintenance; Pruning Techniques for Sustainable Landscapes; Integrated Pest Management (Plant Diseases, Insects and Vertebrates, and Weeds); and Water Efficient Slope and Greenbelt Management; Landscape Design, Installation, and Maintenance; Dry Climate Xeriscaping; Landscape Water Conservation; Water Smart Landscape Plants.
Xeriscape landscaping, by definition, is landscaping designed specifically for areas that are susceptible to drought or for properties where water conservation is practiced. At Bylands we understand the needs of native plants that thrive in our climate and irrigate them accordingly. Xeriscape principles reduce landscaping maintenance and reduce water consumption which is environmentally as well as financially friendly.
Plants with the same watering needs are grouped together in areas of the garden that are best suited for their needs. This happens by properly designing the beds and grading the soil to take full advantage of rainfall.
Mulch is a key factor in xeriscaping as it helps your soil conserve as much as 30 percent more of its moisture. This benefit is invaluable during times of extreme dryness experienced in the Okanagan. Mulch also keeps your soil from becoming compacted due to rain and watering. Mulch is also the perfect agent for reducing water run off and erosion. This keeps your plants from being infected with soil-borne diseases such as fungi. Mulch also keeps your soil at a uniform temperature and promotes growth of microorganisms and earthworms.
Natural Restoration and Land Reclamation
Natural Restoration or Land Reclamation is a method used to return disturbed land to a state where it is useful once again. Without reclamation, the land would be left damaged and incapable of supporting other uses such as agriculture, forestry, recreation and wildlife habitat. Bylands has the knowledge and tools to help restore these disturbed habits back to their original surroundings.
