Discover the rich histroy of Port Douglas on this scenic day long tour to the Northern end of Harrison Lake.....
Port Douglas was the first stop for many gold miners on the way to the gold fields of the upper Fraser River. For many years this water and land route was the easiest way to the interior until the cariboo wagon road through the Fraser Canyon was completed in the mid 1860s. Port Douglas was a typical gold rush town - boom and bust. Bars, hotels and stores proliferated as thousands of prospectors made their way to the gold fields. The gold rush gave Port Douglas its brief claim to fame - for about for years the town was the second largest settlement in Southern British Columbia after Yale. Today the remnants of Port Douglas are a reminder of the pursuit of wealth during those hard living frontier years.
