Step Together Preschool

Step Together Learning Centre has always offered a 2.5 or a 4 hour preschool program.

In the 2.5 hour preschool program children are encouraged to participate in the pre-school readiness programming that supports children's development in social, emotional, cognitive and physical developments.  Through the emergent play based learning environment children learn the skills to enjoy success in their early learning environments as well as their future school environments.

In the 4 hour preschool program children participate along-side the children attending the 2.5 hour program, however they continue their play based social learning as they are encouraged to learn many life skills as they engage in lunch preparation and the social dynamics that mealtimes offer.  This longer preschool programming allows children to explore their learning environment through the facilitation of the trained Early Childhood Educators to make deeper connections and therefore meanings of their experiences while further preparing them for their future longer days of Kindergarten.

*NEW* Skills Enhancement Preschool Program

Commencing fall of 2011, Step By Step will be offering a 2.5 hour preschool program running for 8 week sessions that ensures success in school.  Through the child friendly team approach of a Child Specialist, an Occupational Therapist and a Speech and Language Pathologist, children aged 3-5 years will be encouraged to further develop specific skills that will help them to sit and attend to tasks, develop the large muscles that support their bodies to cope with the full days of learning and the fine motor dexterity that further supports their ability to manipulate writing objects along with the social skills necessary to work in groups with peers.

This program offers limited spaces to ensure that each child has the individualized attention to support their success in this preschool program and their future school experience.

Hyde Creek After School Activity Program

This program is for children aged 9 to 12 years and is offered after school with a blend of both community integration and recreational programming.  Children in this program are encouraged to engage with peers in a safe and "youth oriented" environment.  Through the facilitation of Youth Workers the children examine their role in community and their connection to neighbourhood.  While in the program the children go into the community a couple of times each week to do community tasks that they then receive credits which they are able to apply toward a recreational program of their choice.  The other days in the program they are engaged in programming rich in arts, physical activities, life skill programs and other activities determined by them.

*NEW* Middle School Mentorship Program

Starting September 15, 2011, Step By Step is pleased to offer a program that bridges the transition from Elementary school to Middle School through a mentorship program offered at the Scout's Hall in Blue Mountain Park.

Children in Middle School attend the after school portion of the Out of School Care Program offered at the Blue Mountain site where they share their experiences of art, games, science activities, woodworking, crafts, etc., with children between the ages of 6 - 10 years.  As the mentors share their experiences they gain leadership and presentation skills and receive credits that can be used in their community programs.
