Porcelain veneers are essentially the "false fingernails" of dentistry. They are custom made "shells" bonded to the surface of discolored, uneven or damaged teeth to create a bright, healthy smile. The procedure usually requires two appointments: one to prepare the teeth, and the second to insert the veneers. If you believe your smile could use some improving, porcelain veneers may be the right solution. Tooth discoloration and stain from such things as smoking, the consumption of highly pigmented food or drinks (coffee, tea, red wine) can be remedied by this technique. Bleaching has a high rate of success, provided that the stain is extrinsic (discoloration is from accumulated surface stain), and not within the tooth itself. This is an extremely popular dental procedure that often has dramatic results. Air abrasion systems use a particle stream of aluminum oxide (much like a mini sand blaster) to achieve such things as removing stains, preparing teeth for fissure sealants, and even to prepare tooth surfaces for fillings in place of a high-speed drill. As well as operating without the high-pitched noise of a high-speed turbine, air abrasion systems operate without the friction and vibration that can sometimes cause pain and discomfort. Most patients find air abrasion procedures virtually painless even without anesthetic. The laser in dentistry demonstrates the increasing sophistication of the profession. Lasers produce a highly concentrated light beam that can treat soft tissue and harden white composite fillings. Modern laser therapy is virtually painless allowing some dental work, such as the cutting of gum tissue, to be performed without the use of anesthesia. Patients often report that they experience little, if any, postoperative pain and faster healing. In addition to this, because lasers seal blood vessels, the amount of bleeding is dramatically reduced, as are the chances of infection. Orthodontics involves repositioning of teeth to not only achieve a satisfactory esthetic result, but also to improve overall dental health. Orthodontics allows for the ideal position of your teeth, thereby decreasing the rate of dental caries by facilitating home care and tooth cleaning. Malpositioned teeth are also susceptible to uneven tooth wear, which may decrease the longevity of your teeth. Ortho treatment, particularly in adolescent children will not only facilitate oral health, but will also alter the entire facial profile and appearance. All children are precious. This is why it is particularly important that their first dental appointment is enjoyable and pleasant. We want to make sure their overall dental experience is a good one.
