Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) is a technique used to treat many painful conditions. IMS involves inserting a very fine needle into the tight muscles and into the muscles surrounding the area of the spine where the nerve originates. Stimulation of the muscle is followed by the muscle relaxing or releasing and the nerve becoming less irritable. Ultimately with the nerve less sensitive and the muscles relaxed, the stress, strain or compression is relieved from the joint or soft tissues leading to recovery and freedom from pain
