Oral Fluid Drug Testing
Oral fluid drug testing is one of the newer technologies in the industry and continues to grow in popularity. SureHire has embraced the technology and is the largest provider of oral fluid drug testing services in Canada, with years of knowledge and experience in the field.
Express Oral Fluid Drug Testing
We offer two options for oral fluid drug testing. The first is a 5-panel express test. This tests for the following drugs: Amphetamines (including methanphetamines), Cannabinoids (Marijuana), Cocaine, Opiates (Codeine, Morphine, Heroin, Vicodin) and Phencyclidine (PCP). The results of an express drug test are instant. It is also important to note that the results of an express test are qualitative, meaning that the results are either a pass or fail, the level of drug in the body is not determined.
Lab Based Oral Fluid Drug Testing
The second option is to do a lab based oral fluid drug test. This can be done in addition to the express test, or on its own. This type of testing provides a quantitative result, meaning that the levels of drugs in the body can be determined.
When an oral fluid drug test is being sent to the lab, the standard practise is to do a 5-panel screen, but there is an option to do a 6-panel, or even 10-panel drug screen.
The 6-panel screen separately tests for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine. That is the only difference from the 5-panel test.
The 10-panel screen tests for the following drugs: Marijuana, Cocaine, Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, Phencyclidine, Benzodiazepines, Tricyclic Antidepressants, Methadone, Opiate, and Barbiturates. Lab results are generally available within 2-5 business days.
Oral fluid tests have grown in popularity because it is nearly impossible to use an adulterate (flush kit, fake sample, etc.) to alter the results of the test, ensuring a highly accurate express test.
Additionally, the short drug detection timeline has increased the willingness of certain companies to adopt this technology. Oral fluid drug testing is often used to determine current impairment due to drug use, rather than historical drug use.
An oral fluid drug test will not detect drug use that occurred even a week in the past. The detection timeline follows closely in line with impairment timelines, depending upon the specific drug. By using oral fluid drug testing, companies are able to eliminate the argument that their employees "smoked pot on the weekend and shouldn't be penalized for their actions at work." This situation would no longer occur.
Currently the market is saturated with D-I-Y (do it yourself) kits because they are marketed as "easy" to use. Unfortunately, not all oral fluid drug testing kits are created equal and if steps are not followed exactly, incorrect readings and results may occur.
SureHire recommends that companies never do in-house testing themselves. The legal liability alone is reason enough. SureHire is highly experienced in this field and is not affiliated with any one brand of test kits. We are constantly updating our technology to keep up with new advances in oral fluid drug testing, so that we can serve our companies and clients with the best technology on the market.
