Off line captioning are captions that are pre-produced for prerecorded television shows or films for the hearing impaired. It is also a valuable tool for people learning to read or speak another language. This is why accuracy is so important. Closed Captioning is quite labour intensive as the writers strive for accuracy and must research all unfamiliar terms and phrases. Depending on how much dialogue and unfamiliar terminology there is, it can take from 6-12 hours to caption one half hour show. Scripts are incredibly helpful for research and correct spelling of names and terminology to assist in a successful captioning project. We strive to create accurate and comprehensive Closed Captions for all viewers to be able to enjoy your programming.

Pop-on captions are just like they sound. A phrase or sentence “pops on” for a couple seconds, disappears and another caption “pops on” to replace it. The captions are timed to synchronize with the speaker and they are also placed on the screen to help identify who the speaker is. Pop-on captions are more labour intensive as there is a bit more work involved in placing the captions to identify which person is speaking. They are also much easier for the viewer to understand who is speaking when there are multiple characters on the screen.

Roll-up captions also appear like they sound. They start at the bottom of the screen and roll up 2-3 lines at a time. When a new sentence rolls up from the bottom it pushes the other lines up. It generally appears at the bottom of the screen and doesn't move around to identify the speaker like pop up captions. It uses a chevron >> to indicate a new speaker instead.

The process to add closed captioning to web files is called e-captioning. With an ever increasing population gaining access to web and internet video's through Youtube, iPhones, iPads, to name a few, it's no wonder that President Barack Obama has already passed a law to requires any TV show broadcast online and all devices capable of displaying video to be able to display closed captions. Want to reach a broader audience? E-caption your video's with Gigecast!
