At the federal level, the “rules of the road” for both business and consumer bankruptcy filings are spelled out in the BIA (Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act of Canada.) The intent of the act is to allow honest debtors a chance to get a fresh financial start through forgiveness of most of their unsecured debt. However, a Canada bankruptcy is not free, and for some Canadians, the cost will be more than simply court costs and fees paid to a licensed bankruptcy trustee who manages the filing.
